CALOUNDRA RSL SUB BRANCH HISTORY
What is the RSL?
The initials RSL stand for Returned & Service’s League. The organisation was initially formed as a support group for Returned Service Personnel, their families and the families of those lost in the line of duty.
The RSL organisation itself was formed in 1916 when the first members of the 1st AIF started returning to Australia after the Gallipoli Campaign. These soldiers realised that there was no assistance available to the families of the Diggers who had been killed in Gallipoli. These soldiers got together and formed an organisation to assist the families of their mates and those who returned with shocking injuries and disabilities, such as missing limbs, shell shock, etc.
Since then, the RSL has become one of Australia’s largest support based organisations, providing millions of dollars back into the community through Hospitals, Retirement Homes, Charities and Sporting Groups.
Caloundra RSL Sub Branch
The Caloundra RSL charter was granted on 24th November 1946 and the Sub Branch operated out of the now demolished School of Arts building in Canberra Terrace, Caloundra. In 1948 the Sub Branch purchased the Glideway Hall building in Edmund Street.
In 1962 the building was sold and the Sub Branch moved to its present location on 19 West Terrace, Caloundra. The Club was formed in 1963. The building underwent extensive renovations in 2006 and 2007. These redevelopments resulted in the Club becoming one of the largest and best-appointed Clubs in Queensland, employing well over 400 staff.
The redevelopments have provided the Sub Branch with their own offices, lounge and bar areas for their exclusive use.
Sub Branch Office Bearers are available in the offices each morning for all matters relating to the Sub Branch. Pension Welfare Officers are in attendance daily and Department of Veterans Affairs representatives visit on a monthly basis.
It was primarily and always will be, an RSL Club. The Club displays memorabilia collected from all over the world commemorating the courageous deeds our ex-service personnel have performed for our country.
