Tahlia Matheson

Country Music Wednesday presents: Tahlia Matheson

Tahlia Matheson was only eight years old when she began singing. Music was always around her as she grew up watching her Dad play in bands around her home in the Byron Shire.

Tahlia was always songwriting, so when she was 14 and had to write an original piece for a school assessment it came easily. She sat down at the piano and started writing. This confirmed her love for songwriting and she hasn’t stopped since. The piano has been swapped out for the guitar and with a lot of international travel and life experiences, she has plenty to write about.

In 2012, at just 16, Tahlia attended the world-renowned Tamworth Country Music Festival where she developed her passion for country music. In that same year she would also go on to be selected to perform on the busking stage at the Byron Bay Blues Festival. She has continued to perform at both festivals each year as well as doing gigs across the northern rivers of New South Wales and southeast Queensland.

At 20, Tahlia travelled to Nashville, Tennessee, where she spent five weeks songwriting. While there she had the amazing opportunity to perform at The Blue Bird Cafe, to this day she still sees playing at this iconic venue as one of the highlights of her music career so far.

In 2018, after a couple of years working and travelling the world, Tahlia is back performing her repertoire of songs in full force. Booking regular gigs up and down the east coast of Australia. She began the year being chosen to sing at The National Folk Festival in Canberra.

In July she travelled to London to attend an intensive songwriting workshop at The London Institute of Contemporary Performance, where she received fantastic feedback on her songwriting and vocal skills.

In late 2018 Tahlia released her debut EP ‘Wait and See’ (link), containing 4 original songs with positive feedback giving her extra confidence as she continued her full schedule of gigs.

Tahlia is working hard to again take her music and career to the next level in 2019. With her will to succeed, sweet melodies and strong vocals she is a home-grown singer-songwriter not to be missed.

The Lyrical

Since topping the charts on Triple J’s Unearthed for the seventh time, The Lyrical has become a rising star of the music
scene on the Sunshine Coast. The Queensland North Coast has always been Australia’s hotbed for new talent in a variety
of genres and the hip hop-reggae scene is no exception to that tradition.

Following in the footsteps of Ben Harper, Bob Marley, Michael Franti and Xavier Rudd, The Lyrical reflects the ingenuity and musical aptitude it takes to be a great artist. The “Unique blend of beat-boxing meshed with folk guitar and socially conscious lyrics is fast becoming the hottest ticket
in town,” (City News).

The Lyrical has toured both Australia and internationally as well as releasing a hugely popular self-titled album, “The
Lyrical,” to critical acclaim. He has supported some amazing artists (Everlast, Katchafire, Ash Grunwald, Dallas Frasca, Natali
Rize, Tikki Taane, Pete Murray, Illy, Trinity Roots), shared the stage and played with the likes of Leon Mobley of The Innocent Criminals, Michael Franti and Blue King Brown. He’s rocked festivals such as; BIG DAY OUT, Byron Bay Bluesfest,Caloundra Music Festival, Sprung Festival, Party in The Paddock, Island Vibes Festival, Festival Of The Sun, Red Deer Festival plus many, many more. The Lyrical has also had great radio and online success hitting No.1 SEVEN TIMES on TripleJ’s Unearthed and gained a No.5 spot for Sweden’s “Top 50 Most Streamed Songs” for the year of 2015.

The Lyrical cut his teeth on the streets busking three nights a week and quickly became a well-known music champion to
the thousands who stopped to dance and play along over the years. “I love busking,” tells Karl, “it’s the BEST way to talk to
everyday people with your music, and when you busk… you hear the REAL truth about it… if people don’t like it… they tell
you! If they think you’re inspiring… they tell you that too – it’s great!”

Karl was born in Vanuatu and then moved to the Solomon Islands as a child. Whilst growing up in Honiara he began
playing and creating music with his neighbour Tommy (a.k.a. Solomon Kwatea). They developed their passion for music
together, sitting near the radio whilst copying the music with their mouths because they had no instruments. “If we
weren’t doing that, we were drumming on cardboard.

Melanie Dyer

What’s better than live country music? Nothing! We’ve got a fantastic show as Country Music Wednesday presents MELANIE DYER.

In the summer of 2019/20 MELANIE DYER enjoyed breakout success with her pop-embellished country bop ‘Memphis T-Shirt’.The song was released in November and was swiftly added to playlists on HIT & NOVA Networks and over 100 REGIONAL STATIONS around Australia. Additionally, to all the country music stations and networks nationally. The track also relished support across NATIONAL and INTERNATIONAL APPLE MUSIC and SPOTIFY playlists and in February 2020, Melanie SOLD OUT her first-ever Sydney headline show at the OXFORD ART FACTORY. Melanie burst onto the scene with startling vibrancy. Her debut EP laid a solid foundation and produced country chart-topping singles ‘Lifetime‘, ‘Busy Doing Nothing‘ and ‘All You Need to Know About Me‘.

In 2017 Melanie released her debut album ‘Fresh‘ with the title track an established #1 HIT that occupied the TOP SPOT on the OFFICIAL AUSTRALIAN COUNTRY AIRPLAY CHART for five consecutive weeks while the accompanying video went #1on Australia’s Country Music Channel (CMC). Follow up single ‘Save My Cents‘ a song Melanie penned alone, also shot to the top of both RADIO and CMC CHARTS and was announced a TOP 10 FINALIST in the International Songwriting Competition in 2018. Dyer has played CMC ROCKS FESTIVAL – Australia’s largest International Country Music Festival three times and in 2019 she rocked the MAIN STAGE for the first time. In February 2020 Melanie was invited back for her second ’writers round’ performance at NASHVILLE’S ICONIC ‘BLUEBIRD CAFÉ‘ and has opened shows for many Aussie artists including Brad Cox and The McClymonts.

Now Melanie has revealed her brand new single 20s.

Produced and mixed by Konstantin Kersting (Mallrat, Tones & I), 20s was largely written in Nashville during a solo trip Melanie booked with no pressure to write for a specific purpose, but purely just to explore the city.“Be reckless on the edge, get hooked on a high you can only get from loving living life on empty coz that’s how we do our 20s” is sure to be an anthem for those in their second decade.

MELANIE DYER says,
“I’m in the thick of the best years of my life where I’m exploring new things, meeting new people and figuring out where I want my life to go. This chapter of my life inspired the next single, simply titled ‘20s’. This song captures the fearless freedom and possibility that lights you up in your 20s.”“There can be so much pressure that comes with being in your 20s. Asking yourself ‘What should I be doing, why haven’t I achieved this yet?’ and comparing yourself to others is a normal part of navigating this chapter.I want this song to be a reminder that it’s ok to not have it all worked out and planned. It’s ok to not have a six figure job and instead drink cheap wine because you’ve spent your rent money on concert tickets. I feel like I will soon hit my 30s and thank myself for enjoying these moments, because life is way too short to be boring and responsible all the time.”

Gary Hudson

2018 marks 46 years playing pubs, clubs and parties. I guess I am lucky to be able to do
something I love and be able to get paid for it. From Club Med Malaysia to The Able Tasman
rocking back and fro every night on Bass Strait to some really way out parties, music has
taken me all over the place and given lots of opportunities to meet people.
Having the opportunity to share the stage with some great musicians over the years has taught
me to appreciate different talents, instruments and styles of music. I definitely have a passion
for classic rock and big ballads that tell a story.
I learned one thing from Aussie rock legend Ted Mulry years ago – don’t let your ego get
bigger than your talent. I like to think that one lesson has been the thing that has kept me in
the game for so long. With that in mind I have always tried to tackle the songs I can do best
and not take on things that won’t work for my voice.
At every gig I aim to target songs best suited to my audience and have a wide repertoire
which sees me through most situations, the audience will generally know most of the
material.
While I am strongly influenced by artists like The Eagles, Phil Collins. Eric Clapton, The
Beatles, Garth Brooks, I don’t forget that my audience may have other favourite genres, rock
and roll or country.
To everyone who continues to support me and to all those who have helped create my “life of
music” you are all very much appreciated.
